The Sun's 'Who Cares Wins' Awards celebrates Health Heroes

The Sun celebrated NHS staff, charities and volunteers last night (Monday) at a gala awards bash overseen by Lorraine Kelly and attended by a briefly-dancing Prime Minister and a raft of well-known celebrities including Chris Evans, Penny Lancaster and Rod Stewart and Richard Bacon.

The Who Cares Wins ceremony, which honours those across the health and social care sector who go above and beyond for their patients or causes, proved an emotional evening at Central London’s British Medical Association – with barely a dry eye in the house.

Now in its second year, winners – all nominated by Sun readers – included:

  • Kat Mayer, awarded Best Nurse by soon-to-be Virgin DJ Chris Evans, after the Lincoln-based ward sister walked some ten miles to treat her patients during the Beast from the East
  • The team at the University Hospitals of Leicester who kept miracle baby Vanellope Wilkins alive despite being born with Thoracic Ectopia Cordis, meaning her heart was born outside her body
  • Dr Peter Reynolds, after he performed miraculous surgery on ‘baked bean boy’ Frankie Thompson, whose Best Neonatal award was presented by the Prime Minister Theresa May.

The evening was attended by celebrities including Chris Evans, Rod Stewart and Penny Lancaster, Mark Cavendish & Peta Todd and Richard Bacon as well as Health Secretary Matt Hancock MP and the boss of NHS England, Simon Stevens.

At the event, the Prime Minister said: “I would like to say thank you – on behalf of the whole country – to all those who work in our NHS. Thank you to everyone around the country for your tireless and patient work saving lives, helping the sick and comforting the distressed. And I want to pay tribute to The Sun for this opportunity.”
