Our History

Our titles have a long history of innovation and campaigning for change. The Times is the oldest UK national newspaper in existence. Often referred to as ‘the paper of record’, it was first published as The Daily Universal Register on January 1, 1785. The Sunday Times followed on October 23, 1822 and has become renowned for the quality of its investigative journalism, design and editing, and for its coverage of British politics and the arts.  The first issue of The Sun published in tabloid format and under the ownership of Rupert Murdoch was on November 17 1969. The Sun soon became the people's paper, sitting right at the heart of the national conversation.
