Here’s your chance to be paid while training to be a journalist for The Sun! Britain’s best-selling newspaper is launching the second year of its Apprentice Scheme, and it’s bigger and better than ever!
If you are seriously interested about becoming a news, sport, features or showbiz reporter or writer, or are interested in a career in production journalism, this scheme could be for you.
Completed applications need to be submitted by 9am Monday 10 July and you need to complete the online application below.
Candidates who will be invited to an Assessment Day will be notified by Monday 17 July 2017.
As a successful apprentice you will be paid to train as a journalist before having the chance to work full-time at The Sun. The scheme is for 18 – 25 year olds, with at least five good GCSEs (or equivalent), including English, who haven’t pursued University education. If you have previously, or are currently completing a university degree this particular scheme is not the one for you.
The Sun Apprentice Scheme starts in August with a two-week introductory course through News Associates (http://newsassociates.co.uk) who run Britain’s number-one course with the journalists’ training body, the NCTJ (http://www.nctj.com/). This will then be followed by a 22-week intensive training course.
Both will be held at the News Associates HQ in Wimbledon, south London. You will be taught to write and learn about journalism law, court reporting, public affairs, production journalism as well as learn shorthand. The intensive course will be 4 days in the classroom each week, with a fifth to be spent at The Sun where you will be mentored by The Sun’s senior journalists. Once you have passed the course, you will start work full-time at The Sun.
Remember - this is not an internship, you will be paid throughout the year as an apprentice!
Here’s what The Sun is looking for in its apprentice journalists:
- A passion for news or sport
- Knowledge of new media - including social media
- At least 5 GCSEs or equivalent, grade C or above, including English
- Good command of the English language
- Confidence in your writing
- Willingness to listen and learn
- A great work ethic and be self-motivated
- Willingness to study and work simultaneously
- Excellent communication skills - verbal and written
- Be presentable
- Have the right to work in the UK and the right to hold a valid passport
- Be able to live within commuting distance of south and central London
- Be willing to travel without notice
- A full driving licence is desirable but not essential
There will be an assessment day held in central London for all shortlisted applicants. Shortlisted candidates will be invited attend on either Monday 31 July, 2017 or Tuesday 1 August, 2017. All apprentices will be chosen from their performance at the assessment day. Apprenticeships will be offered places on the scheme by 3 August 2017.
Successful applicants will then start a two-week foundation course at News Associates’ offices in Wimbledon on Monday 21 August, 2017 before the 22-week fast-track course starts on Monday 4 September, 2017.

As well as receiving the fully funded training through News Associates, successful applicants will be offered a 12 – 24 month fixed term contract at a competitive salary with 6 weeks’ holiday per annum.
