Sun offers chance to hang with Rembrandt

The Sun, in partnership with Amsterdam's Rijksmuseum, is offering one reader the chance to have their SELFIE hung alongside Rembrandt masterpieces at an exhibition marking 350 years since the Dutch Master's death.

Rembrandt painted his first 'selfie' aged 22 and he went on to craft nearly a hundred self-portraits - and Britain's number one newspaper is now calling on readers to submit their own selfies, with the best to be displayed at the 'All The Rembrandts' exhibition at one of Europe's leading art galleries alongside hundreds of the 17th century painter's most famous works.

More than 2 million people passed through the doors of the newly renovated Rijksmuseum in 2017 and the crowds for this landmark exhibition are expected to be through the roof.

It's not the first time The Sun have partnered with the art world, with the paper's masthead redesigned by national treasure David Hockney to coincide with his major Tate retrospective in 2017.

Museum director Taco Dibbits, who will be part of the Sun's crack judging panel, compares Rembrandt's catalogue to looking at somebody's social media account - and it was that that inspired The Sun to launch this unique competition.

Full details of the competition can be found here.  A PDF of the competition launch in The Sun is attached.

Taco Dibbits, Rijksmuseum Director, said:

"When you see the hundreds of prints and paintings Rembrandt created, it's like looking at somebody's social media account. He was the first painter who recorded the world around him.

"Today if you see somebody funny in the street  you take a photo and post it on social media. Well, Rembrandt would make a quick drawing or an etching of what he saw and sell it. Just like today's social media stars, Rembrandt's selfies were propaganda for himself.

"He was fascinated by expressions and painted himself looking amazed or laughing, something we're still fascinated by today."

A spokesman for The Sun said:

"This is a brilliantly exciting time to work with one of Europe's leading art galleries on a truly unique competition. We can't wait to see a Sun reader's 21st century artwork alongside some of the greatest works of the previous millennium.

"With this competition and after the great David Hockney redesigned our masthead, it's clear The Sun remains the artist's paper of choice."
