Success for News UK magazine titles at the BSME Awards

It was a triumphant time for News UK in the ‘magazine Oscars’, the BSME Awards, last night (Tuesday).

We produced five winners in the prestigious British Society of Magazine Editors (BSME) Awards in London.

In the best newspaper magazine category, The Sun on Sunday Fabulous mag editor Sinead McIntyre and her The Times Magazine counterpart Nicola Jeal were declared joint winners.

Melanie Reid from The Times Magazine was named Columnist of the Year – consumer section. Tetraplegic Melanie, who broke her neck and back in April 2010 while horse riding, writes Spinal Column about her life as a disabled person.

As The Times Magazine made it a victory hat-trick, Chris Hitchcock received the gong as Art Director of the Year – consumer category.

Arts editor Helen Hawkins was chosen as the music, arts and literary category winner for her work on The Sunday Times Culture mag.

Nicola Jeal commented: “I am delighted to win the award for best magazine editor for the second year running – although even better this year as I share the award with the fabulous Sinead of Fabulous.

“And to win in every category we possibly could, from best art director to best columnist, was a tremendous achievement and a reflection on the hard work the Saturday Times Magazine’s brilliant staff put in week in, week out.”

Sinead McIntyre said: “I am delighted that the hard work my team puts in week in, week out to create the magazine has been recognised with this award. And I couldn’t think of a better person to be joint winner with than Nicola – someone I respect and look up to.”
Helen Hawkins said: “I’m very grateful to the BSME for inventing a new category for Culture to win! It can be tough going up against big-budget publications, which most arts sections are not. So well done the creative thinkers on the awards team. And a huge thanks to my brilliant colleagues, who are really winners of this award too.”
Chris commented: “I’m delighted to accept the award on behalf of everyone on The Times Magazine’s design and picture desks, and to thank them for all the talent and hard work they display in every issue.”
