Building a sustainable future for great journalism
The News Academy's first ever summer school takes place this month. Big-hitters from The Sun, The Times and The Sunday Times will be sharing their knowledge and tips with aspiring young journalists from across the four corners of Britain.
Twenty young people – chosen from hundreds of applications – will spend the week (Aug 24-29) at News UK's London Bridge headquarters, creating and compiling their very own newspaper from a real-life newsroom. On Friday, the students will travel to Newsprinters Broxbourne - the world's biggest print site - to see their hard work roll off the presses in an exclusive 16-page edition.
Throughout the week they will enjoy masterclasses from world-renowned journalists. They will put their writing skills to the test - with events ranging from a local dog show to a celebrity photoshoot to a Tottenham Hotspur football match.
The Summer School is the highlight of a year where the News Academy has hosted national conferences and school visits with 16-18 year-olds around Britain and Ireland, working to inspire the next generation of newsmakers.
For the fledgling journalists this is a week filled with opportunities and teaching they will never forget.
Under the editorial guidance of Jon Moorhead, Head of Editorial Projects of The Sun, highlights of the week include:
- Photoshoot interview with Nicole Scherzinger
- Meet and greet with David Dinsmore, Editor of The Sun
- Discussing women in journalism with Eleanor Mills, Editorial Director of The Sunday Times
- The art of interviewing with Camilla Long, Columnist at The Sunday Times
- Fashion session with Gemma Calvert, Acting Assistant Editor of Fabulous magazine
- Session with Mick Hume, Columnist at The Times, on how to write
- Politics discussions with David Wooding, Sun on Sunday Political Editor and Trevor Kavanagh, Political Columnist at The Sun

I’m very proud to be part of the News Academy and hope that the students will feel inspired by what they learn with us."
