Air ambulance fuel, a performing arts programme for sick children and financial advice seminars for palliative care patients are just some of the benefits that News Corp’s UK-based News Corp Giving philanthropic initiative is bringing to local communities.

News Corp supports and invests in organizations that strengthen, support and provide for the local community. News Corp Giving is a joint UK-based philanthropy initiative designed to support communities in which News Corp’s UK-based staff – those from News UK, HarperCollins UK and Dow Jones – live and work. It was established earlier this year with £100,000 worth of funding from parent company News Corp.

Voted on by employees, the funding will support charities from across the philanthropy spectrum, from crisis support and medical aid charities to those promoting digital literacy, learning and youth development.

The top grant of £50,000 was awarded to The Alzheimer’s Society, while St. Christopher’s Hospice, Whizz Kids, Children’s Hospice Association Scotland and London’s Air Ambulance each received £10,000. Other charities to benefit from News Corp Giving’s initiative include Cardboard Citizens, Carers’ Trust, Hemihelp, Medical Detection Dogs, One Degree, Southwark Pensioners’ Centre, Ministry of Stories, Tomorrow’s People, SiMY Community Development and UK Youth.

As part of the process to select the recipient charities, UK-based staff from across the three companies, including those at News Corp UK’s London Bridge headquarters, News UK’s print site in Broxbourne and HarperCollins UK’s Glasgow distribution centre, were invited to nominate a charitable organization they thought would be deserving of the funding.

A panel of judges from across the companies drew up a short-list of charities from the hundreds of submissions, and the final selection of charities was decided by staff vote.
