The Sun travel editor Lisa Minot will be presented with a prestigious Special Contribution Award at the Travel Media Awards 2018.
Lisa joined Britain’s bestselling newspaper as a sub-editor in 1991, and worked her way up the ranks. She has been The Sun’s full-time travel editor since 1999, and her work has seen the travel section go from just one page a week to the two weekly sections the paper carries today.
Lisa said: “Just 18 years ago, I had the privilege to enter a world where ordinary people make our dreams come true on a daily basis. They do the behind-the-scenes magic to create the holiday memories we treasure forever. I’m still inspired by those people, and still want to inform and excite my readers. This award is for all of them.”
In her time, Lisa has seen the internet and low-cost airlines revolutionise travel, and has ridden the wave, ensuring that well-travelled readers are able to enjoy all the world has to offer. Within the newspaper, her department was also the first to integrate its print and online offering.
And while Lisa’s travel section goes from strength to strength, her journalistic instincts have seen many of her stories end up on the front page over the years.
She was the first to report on XL Airways nosediving into bankruptcy and led the way on coverage of Brits stuck abroad as a result. This year, her front-page story on Thomas Cook’s new sunbed booking system was such a bombshell scoop that the editor of German newspaper Bild declared ‘Zis means war’ on Twitter.
Lisa regularly appears on Sky, ITV, BBC and talkRADIO commenting on travel stories, and offering advice and guidance to viewers looking for the perfect holiday, as she has done through her travel section for years.
Despite her years of globetrotting, Lisa’s holidays haven’t changed much at all — every summer, she still stays in a caravan in the south of France, a few minutes outside of St Tropez.
The Travel Media Awards will welcome Lisa to the stage on October 17 at ME London Hotel on the Strand for this year’s ceremony.
