The Irish Sun scooped double glory at the National Journalism Awards in Ireland yesterday afternoon (Thursday).

The Irish Sun’s Showbiz Editor Ken Sweeney was crowned Showbiz Journalist of the Year for a string of exclusives, including an emotional interview where the late Father Ted star Frank Kelly revealed his diagnosis with Parkinson’s disease.

They also won Headline of the Year for summing up a story about a priest who had been filmed snorting cocaine under the headline, Charlie Chaplain.

The Newsbrands Ireland Journalism Awards, sponsored by The National Lottery, were held in Dublin’s Mansion House.

The Irish Sun Editor Kieran McDaid said:

I’m extremely proud that some of the great work done by journalists every day has been honoured by their peers.”

Sweeney said:

It’s a tremendous honour for me to accept this award, but I have the backing of a great team at The Irish Sun.”
