Harry Cole appointed as The Sun’s Political Editor

The Sun has today announced that Harry Cole has been appointed as Political Editor. Harry rejoins The Sun from the Mail on Sunday, where he has been Deputy Political Editor since 2018, and will take the helm of a politics team tasked with delivering great political coverage across both print and digital platforms for The Sun.

Cole started his career at politics website Guido Fawkes, before moving to The Sun as Westminster correspondent. Cole has also been Contributing Editor at The Spectator.

Victoria Newton, Editor-in-Chief of The Sun said: "Harry started his career at The Sun, and in his inimitable, mischievous way has firmly established himself as the scourge of politicians, breaking a string of fabulous scoops. I’m delighted he’s returning to his natural home."

Harry steps into the role as Political Editor following the announcement today that current Political Editor Tom Newton Dunn is to take a new role as presenter and Chief Political Commentator for Times Radio, the new national digital radio station to be launched by News UK this summer.

Harry said: “I am thrilled to be coming home to The Sun in my dream job and hitting the daily grind as British politics continues its manic roller coaster ride.

“I want to thank Tom Newton Dunn, who not only gave me a shot in the Lobby, but has been a tireless advocate for Sun readers in the corridors of power for a decade. A big beast of the pack, his forensic demolition of politicians and cutting through of spin, leaves huge boots to fill. I can't wait to start working again with Victoria and her brilliant Sun team.”

Across 16 years at The Sun, Tom Newton Dunn has won five national newspaper awards, led its coverage of four general elections as well as Brexit, and his candid interviews with President Trump made headlines around the world. Tom will continue to write occasional opinion pieces for The Sun.

Tom said: “I'm hugely grateful to the five brilliant editors I've worked under at The Sun. They've given me an incredibly privileged ringside seat for so many extraordinary times in Westminster over the last decade, as well as the freedom to cover the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan before then.

"I'm really pleased to still be writing for The Sun, and I'm delighted that my friend and former colleague Harry Cole is returning. He is one of the finest political journalists in the Lobby, and it's a huge pleasure to be handing over to him."

Both will start their new roles later in the summer.
