BUSSY McBusface – The Scottish Sun’s big red double decker bus – headed out on tour yesterday to visit primary schools around the country.
As part of our Free Books For Schools campaign, The Scottish Sun is visiting different towns every day this week with authors and special guests on-board to read to kids.
Today the title launched in Glasgow with First Minister Nicola Sturgeon and CBeebies star Katrina Bryan, from Nina and the Neurons.
St Anne’s Primary youngsters boarded the spookily decorated bus, and headed to the top deck for the reading event.
Ms Sturgeon read two Collins Big Cat books while actress Katrina read an excerpt from her favourite kids’ book, Mr Penguin and the Lost Treasure.
The youngsters, aged five to eight, were engrossed in the stories before getting a chance to quiz the guests about their favourite books as kids.
The First Minister said: “I love engaging with young people at the best of times but engaging with them about books and reading stories is always really special.
“I really enjoyed it – probably even more than they did.”
She added: “The bus is great – it should make a big impact and it’s a fantastic initiative.”
Telly star Katrina added: “It was a brilliant day, the kids were fantastic and I think it is a wonderful thing that everyone is doing here. I’m just really pleased to be part of it.”
The pupils also loved the event saying they loved the stories – and were really excited to go upstairs on the bus.
Scottish Sun Editor Alan Muir said: “The enthusiasm of the youngsters who boarded our double decker shows there’s plenty of mileage in getting kids to read books.
“They loved being read to – and bombarded the First Minister and Katrina with questions about books.”
On day two of our tour, which is in association with Aberdeen Standard Investments, Bussy is heading for Perthshire with Secret Seven author Pamela Butchart on-board.
More than 700 primaries have registered for Free Books For Schools and are collecting tokens, printed in the paper every day, which they’ll swap for a bumper pack of Collins Big Cat books with more than £550.
