About
News UK
We all know breakfast is the most important meal of the working day: so what was on the menu this morning?
Granola and an espresso.
Sum up what you do at News UK in the shortest sentence possible.
Network.
Lay a bit of context on that?
I manage the relationship between the Technology department and our Editorial stakeholders and users. That means ensuring the software and hardware we provide to our staff meets their standards and responding when it doesn’t.
What attracted you to the role in the first place?
It allows someone with a technical background to work within the heart of the business. I’ve always been fascinated with journalism and how we get the story across to our customers.
What’s the most interesting/challenging part of your job?
The sheer variety of the work. We’re a company that has consistently been looking forward, innovating and using leading-edge technologies. That makes what we do more challenging but it’s also where the fun is.
Who is your role model? And why?
I see a lot to admire in Noel Gallagher. He’s not afraid to speak his mind, he’s got razor-sharp wit and he’s enormously creative.
What is your most treasured possession?
If you were to ask my family, they would all say it’s my car – I refuse to even take it out of the garage if it’s been raining!
Who would play you in the film of your life?
Based on looks, Matthew Wright.
You’ve won ten million on the Lottery – what do you do?
I love the outdoors, so I’d retire to a large house in the countryside with plenty of room for gardening and with good walks to nearby pubs.
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?
You make your own luck.
What one bit of advice would you give someone wanting to do your job?
Learn to be flexible. Very often the solutions to problems we face need compromises from both Editorial and Technology.
Tell us something not many people know about you…?
I used to DJ and once played a warmup slot for Sister Sledge.
Who would be your three Fantasy Dinner Party guests? And why?
Roisin Conaty for laughs, Patrick Stewart for stories and David Gilmour for some tunes at the end of the night.
