About
News UK
Staff based in News Corp UK’s London Bridge headquarters are today coming together to support the Borough Market traders affected by the recent terrorist attacks. The initiative, launched by Executive Chairman, Rupert Murdoch, will see every member of staff from News UK, Dow Jones, and Harper Collins receive vouchers worth £10 to spend in the Market and surrounding businesses. The vouchers, donated by News UK, mean that a total of around 3000 employees should spend £30,000 on food and drink in Borough on Wednesday.
The independent traders and producers, both large and small, who rely upon Borough Market for their livelihood, lost valuable stock during the 11 days they were closed and wage bills still had to paid. As one of their closest neighbours, we saw first hand how the terror attacks affected their businesses. Our journalists, technologists, communicators, financiers and marketers from across News UK, HarperCollins and Dow Jones are proudly supporting this pillar of the community.
Teams from across the business have been working closely with Southwark Council and the Borough Market Trustees to create long-term plans too.
Rebekah Brooks, News UK CEO, said:
“As the families and friends of those who lost their lives or were injured remain firmly in our thoughts, we wanted to do something impactful for the many hidden victims. We are a proud member of the Southwark community and a close neighbour to Borough Market, and couldn’t just stand by. Any business would suffer from losing over a week's worth of revenue and these businesses and traders needed our support in making it up. We will continue to support local business in any way we can.”
Darren Henaghan, Managing Director of Borough Market, said:
“A big thanks to our neighbours at News Corp UK for all the support they've given to our traders and the businesses since the attack. The most important thing for all of us is that people are here again, shopping, eating and enjoying all that Borough Market has to offer, helping us to get back doing what we do best: selling wonderful food and drink in an atmosphere of love, friendship and togetherness.”
