If spiders scare you, consult a 10-year-old.
That’s especially good advice if the 10-year-old happens to be Jay from Westfields Junior School in Yateley, Hampshire.
Jay was a member of one of the six winning teams in the Apps for Good market launch event at The News Building level 17 last night (Monday).
Apps for Good is an education charity encouraging young people to change their world by utilising technology.
Youngsters aged from nine to 18 featured in the winning six teams, including Westfields with their ‘Fear Nothing’ app to help people conquer a phobia of the eight-legged arthropods in a fun, interactive way.
The Westfields team won the Information category in the fifth staging of the awards, supported by News UK.
We hosted the apps market launch at our level 17 events space with News UK CTO Christina Scott speaking to guests.
She praised the students attending and stated they were the “noisiest and most enthusiastic” guests we had hosted in the building.
As a previous judge of Apps for Good entries, she continues to be “completely blown away by the creativity of the children involved”.
The winning apps tackle a wide range of issues from puberty and grief to allergies and, of course, fear of spiders. Snakes, apparently, are next on their phobias hit list.
The student teams behind the apps have been working closely with professional development agencies to get their app ready for market over the past eight months.
Spiderboy Jay was also thrilled to get a tour of The Sun editorial floor and the chance to meet editor-in-chief Tony Gallagher.
As for the effectiveness of ‘Fear Nothing’, Jay said: “I was a bit scared of spiders and the app helped me.” Praise indeed from this web wonder.
