The Times Magazine editor, Nicola Jeal

A ‘must-read treat for the weekend’ emerged triumphant at the prestigious ‘magazine Oscars’ last night (Tuesday).
At the British Society of Magazine Editors (BSME) Awards held in London’s Park Lane, editor Nicola Jeal was victorious with The Times Magazine in the newspaper/current affairs brand category.
Nicola said of the Saturday mag:

It’s great to win the award again for best newspaper supplement and
current affairs magazine.

We try really hard every week to produce a magazine that is a treat for the weekend and a must-read: a visual punch with great long reads and packed with fun features, recipes, style and shopping – so the reader can dip in, flick through and then sit down with a coffee and enjoy it for an hour or so.

We are so lucky to have the best columnists like Caitlin Moran, Robert Crampton and Melanie Reid, the brilliant restaurant critic Giles Coren and of course we now have Nadiya Hussain on food too.”

Art director Dan Biddulph scooped the BSME Cover of the Year award with The Sunday Times Magazine’s ‘Blond ambition’ Boris Johnson front (below).
Dan said:

What a lovely surprise. It wouldn’t have been possible without our amazing editor, Eleanor Mills. It was a real collaboration. Thanks also to Perou for taking the photograph, and illustrator Michelle Thompson for adding the lippy.
“We actually had a different idea for Boris, but (thankfully) he decided he didn’t want to do it on the day. Slightly irritated by his change of mind, our gut reaction was to morph him into something of a caricature (working headline: The Clown Prince of Brexit).
“So Perou took a straight portrait, I daubed it with some colour and within seconds, the cover was born.”
