Dean praises The Times and The Sunday Times archive exhibition

Exhibition1200-723x455A leading cleric has praised The Times/Sunday Times archive exhibition at Southwark Cathedral.

Dean of Southwark, the Very Rev Andrew Nunn, was speaking at today’s (Thursday) official opening of the Times Past in Southwark pictures exhibition.

Times Past features 20 iconic images of the Southwark area from 1928-73 displayed in the cathedral’s refectory. The free exhibition is now open 9am-6pm each day until Wednesday September 7.

Images include children playing on the Brandon Estate in 1960, crowds gathering to see Queen Mary open the churchyard at Southwark Cathedral in 1946 and Borough Market in 1938.

Very Rev Nunn said:

It’s a fantastic exhibition. All of the pictures tell this amazing tale of this area. There has been an amazing amount of change in not so many years. It’s important for us and for visitors. You have captured an amazing history. We have a good relationship with News UK, it’s good to have you as neighbours. It’s a fruitful relationship.”

Robert Hands, TNL Executive Managing Editor, said:

It’s a great pleasure to work in partnership with the cathedral. This exhibition cements our presence here. It’s wonderful to give these pictures a new lease of life here.

The Archive team at News UK have put together an evocative collection of photographs that showcase life in Southwark going back to the early 20th century and it’s fascinating to see how the area has evolved. This has been a great partnership with the cathedral team.”
