A new organisation has been launched in memory of The Sunday Times war zone reporter Marie Colvin.

International journalists are spearheading a peer-to-peer online network of female reporters in the Middle East and North Africa in memory of Colvin, who was killed while reporting in Syria in February 2012.

As Colvin said, working as a journalist can be isolating, risky and challenging. A protected members’ forum will provide a safe place for female journalists to share advice and experiences, find support and information, and connect to other journalists, media organisations and professional support groups.

The aim of the Marie Colvin Journalists’ Circle is provide a safe forum for female writers and help them become more active in the media in the Middle East and North Africa.

Speaking at the annual St Bride’s Church memorial service for fallen journalists in November 2010, Colvin said:

“Covering a war means going to places torn by chaos, destruction and death, and trying to bear witness.

“It means trying to find the truth in a sandstorm of propaganda when armies, tribes or terrorists clash. And yes, it means taking risks, not just for yourself but often for the people who work closely with you.”

The Colvin meeting room in the News Building is named in her memory.
