The Times Newseum: Read All About It! The Secrets Behind The News exhibition opens at the Saatchi Gallery on 8th September through 20th September.
The Newseum is an exhibition of artefacts, documents and installations from the newspaper’s extensive archive showcasing how the news has been delivered through the centuries.
The Times has been at the forefront of British media for 229 years and has witnessed significant change to the methods used in relaying breaking news to the British public. Read All About It! The Secrets Behind The News is a distinctive yet distinguished showcase of content which celebrates journalism and its progress, from the earliest methods of reporting using carrier pigeons, through to modern alternatives such as satellite phones.
The Times archive has also made it possible for exhibition visitors to receive a free copy of the cover of The Times or The Sunday Times from the day of their birth.
Other displays will include:
- Telegrams from the Siege of Khartoum, 1884-1885
- Carrier pigeon reports from The Second Boer War
- Press documents from WW1 and WW2
- Code sheets used to keep transmissions about the 1953 Everest Climb secret
- Nera M3 satellite phone used in Iraq, 2003-2004
- Digital installation of 80 smartphones offering viewers unique access to live headlines
- 'Tools of the Trade' wall installation showcasing more than 60 tools used by journalists through the ages
The Times has always strived to be the first to inform the British public of breaking news, no matter how complex the situation. The exhibition explores the stories of Times correspondents and the lengths they went to, and still do, to ensure they report high quality news, anytime, anywhere.
Nick Mays, Archivist of The Times said, “The Times is delighted to bring the Newseum to London. It provides a wholly unique perspective on major historical events and an insight into the journalism that captured them. This is an exhibition about history, journalism, espionage and technology, told using documents and artefacts from The Times’ own archive.”
Visitors to the exhibition will see the history of reporting news up-close, from the sketchbook and diary of pioneering Crimean War correspondent, William Howard Russell, to the bandages of carrier pigeons used to transport stories, through to modern satellite phones used by Times correspondents during the 2006 Iraq War.
Tracking journalism through to the current digital age, the exhibition also includes a digital installation of 80 smartphones offering unique access to newswires and Twitter feeds used by The Times’ editorial staff – viewers will see headlines live as they appear.
The 'Tools of the Trade' wall display will show more than 60 tools used by journalists throughout the ages. From notepads to satphones, gas masks to flak jackets, the telegraph key to the typewriter, for centuries Times correspondents have relied on tried and tested kit, experimented with cutting-edge technology and ransacked their imaginations to secure stories.
Read All About It! The Secrets Behind The News also presents the complete ‘Unquiet Film Series’ that brings to life the stories behind the news. The latest instalment, ‘Adventurous Spirit’, will be released at the Saatchi Gallery as part of the exhibition.
