About
News UK
We all know breakfast is the most important meal of the working day: so what was on the menu this morning?
One of the benefits of being based at home just now is having the chance to make my breakfast in the morning. Nothing fancy on the menu this morning – a toasted bagel with some peanut butter to keep me going through until lunch. With an oat milk latte on the side.
Sum up what you do at News UK in the shortest sentence possible.
Find out all I can about our audiences, and translate the data to help colleagues, and clients in Manchester, Scotland and Ireland.
Lay a bit of context on that?
I support the needs of our commercial teams in Manchester, Glasgow and Dublin providing insight on our audience which is used in commercial responses. Alongside this I provide assistance to the SLT, marketing and editorial teams based in Scotland and Ireland. This can be anything from investment board submission support to understanding our audiences for product and revenue development opportunities.
What attracted you to the role in the first place?
I have always been inquisitive (picture the small child who always asks Why Mummy?) and the idea of a job where I get to ask lots of questions and find out lots of things about people and what they like and why they do things seemed perfect. The fact that there is always something new to ask or explore means that no two days are ever the same especially when you add the commercial element into the mix. One day you are responding to a brief on holidays and travel plans and the next it could be about favourite breakfast cereals.
What’s the most interesting/challenging part of your job?
It is amazing the amount of different ways in which people can now consume the content we produce (print, online, video, audio, events). While this is great news as it gives the company greater opportunity to talk to more people across their day, it has been interesting/challenging trying to make sure we can amalgamate all of this audience into one big number across the regions.
What are the three most important things on your working agenda today?
1. Sharing the latest Covid-19 update from the News Insights team in London – it has been well received by all of our teams across the business that I support.
2. Making sure that we can help create surveys that fit for all of our regional audiences as lockdown is eased differently across the UK and Ireland
3. Attending our Scottish regional livestream. The livestreams from London and Scotland have been a great new addition during this period and hopefully they will continue as restrictions ease.
How do News Scotland’s brands stand out in the Scottish market?
All of our Newsbrands are number one in the markets in which they operate which is a great starting point.
On top of that News Scotland continues to innovate at a time when other brands in our market are contracting. We have three Scottish Sun branded radio stations broadcasting throughout Scotland on digital. The Times recently launched a dedicated Scottish weekend supplement Alba, incorporating the best of Scottish food, walks and holidays. The Scottish Sun prides itself on supporting the community we cover and one of my highlights is working in The Scottish Sun pop-up Christmas shop which has been supported charities close to our hearts for the last three years.
Tell us a stat or fact we don’t know about News Scotland…
This should be easy for me!
Our audience are very charitable and are more likely to donate to charity than the average Scottish adult. 2.3 million adults who consume our products donated to charity in the last 12 months (67% of our audience).
Last book, film, binge watch and sounds you consumed?
Binge watch:
The Last Dance on Netflix. Like most people who will have watched this I was blown away by Michael Jordan’s determination and dedication to being the best he could be in sport (not just basketball).
Who would play you in the film of your life?
Kelly MacDonald.
Last holiday destination? And why?
We went to Canada to visit family and had a great time exploring the country.
You’ve won ten million on the Lottery – what do you do?
So many charities have had to continue to support communities during the pandemic and in fact support even more people than before including a charity we worked really closely with last year through News Giving – Jeely Piece Club. While I couldn’t celebrate a Lottery win during the current restrictions I would certainly look to give something back to the Jeely Piece Club to help them during this time.
Then I may look to buy a new car and visit my family in Canada again.
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?
Never give up. Tomorrow is a new day and it won’t be the same as today.
What one bit of advice would you give someone wanting to do your job?
To be prepared to juggle lots of different tasks at the same time and be able to transfer your knowledge across lots of categories.
Tell us something not many people know about you?
6 months before I got married I underwent an operation which meant I was unable to walk for 3 months and on crutches. After walking down the aisle on my wedding day (in very high heels), on my honeymoon I managed to cycle across the Golden Gate Bridge. Determination and a focus means you can help you achieve your goals.
As the working day comes to a close, who would be your three Fantasy Dinner Party guests? And why?
Riley Whitelum YouTuber from Sailing La Vagabonde. He would have some great adventures to share and also has a great outlook on life.
Geraint Thomas – I would love to hear what really happens on the tours.
Trinny Woodall – I have just received some of her make up so would like to learn how to use it properly and get rid of my screen induced wrinkles.
