Assistant Editor

We all know breakfast is the most important meal of the working day: so what was on the menu this morning?

Weetabix and milk topped with banana. It sounds pretty healthy but yesterday I had a bowl of Coco Pops followed by two chocolate digestive – it was press day and I ‘needed the sugar’. I also drink a whole cafeteria of proper coffee most mornings.

Sum up what you do at Fabulous in the shortest sentence possible.

I make the magazine happen.

Lay a bit of context on that?

I head up our production desk and chase everyone to ensure all copy, pictures and layouts are ready in good time so that my team can sub and proof them before our off-stone deadline each week.

While making sure we have the best headlines and captions on the pages, I manage our flat plans, edit Karren Brady’s Bossing It column and the magazine’s entertainment page.

I look after all book-related content in the magazine and chair events (both back when we were able to do them in-person and virtually). I tend to work closely with the Commercial team to make sure we walk the fine line between editorial independence and keeping advertisers coming back for more.

What attracted you to the role in the first place?

I joined Fabulous just a few weeks after it launched 13 years ago. It was exciting to be part of a new magazine and a team that was leading the way in the industry and doing something different.

Over the years, the magazine has changed and evolved but we’ve always stayed true to our USP of creating amazing celebrity cover shoots, wearable fashion stories, interesting and informative real-life reads that celebrate women.

What’s the most interesting/challenging part of your job?

The most interesting and most challenging parts of my job are pretty much one and the same: the variety.

I’ve had the opportunity to grow my role into a wide-ranging one which keeps me interested – and very busy. I love subbing and production – that will always be at the heart of what I do at Fabulous. I really enjoy editing and writing copy, as well as managing and mentoring people.

I am often the first person the magazine team come to with a problem.  I enjoy supporting and building up people but it does often feel like there are just not enough hours in the day to get to the bottom of my own to-do list!

What are the three most important things on your working agenda today?

Forward planning for the magazine, dealing with an ongoing IT issue that is slowing down production, and checking the names of more than 200 beauty products as part of the Fabulous Beauty Awards.

Last book, film, binge watch and sounds you consumed?

I’m currently absolutely loving Beth O’Leary’s new book The Road Trip. Now Married At First Sight Australia has finished (sob!)

I’ve been binge-watching Behind Her Eyes on Netflix – I read the book when it came out so already knew the (bonkers) twist, but it’s still totally brilliant.

I’m a big podcast listener – I’m currently a fan of Squiggly Careers, How To Own The Room and Off-Menu.

Who is your role model? And why?

I’ve been inspired by so many women – friends, family and colleague. They have combined hard work and talent to succeed in the areas they want to, both inside and outside of work.

My dad is an important role model for me. Although he was registered blind from birth, he never saw it as a disability and he didn’t let it hold him back from doing anything he wanted.

You’ve won ten million on the Lottery – what do you do?

I would buy a time turner like Hermione in Harry Potter! Time is my biggest enemy at the moment. Alongside my full-time job at Fabulous, I write books and I’m currently editing my third rom-com (blatant plug alert: you can buy my book Married At First Swipe here!).

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?

You don’t get anything without a huge amount of hard work.

What one bit of advice would you give someone wanting to do your job?

Learn how to juggle and keep all the plates spinning with a confident smile on your face (even though inside you might be super-worried it’s all about to fall apart).
