The foul-mouthed matriarch Mrs Brown, aka Brendan O’Carroll, is editing today’s paper and Page 3 is back in the Irish edition as a one-off.
As Mrs Brown, 59-year-old O’Carroll is one of the nation’s best-loved TV characters with his award-winning BBC1 show Mrs Brown’s Boys pulling in 12 million viewers.
The popular Dubliner has replaced Editor Paul Clarkson in the hot seat and takes over as guest editor today in aid of the Irish Cancer Society’s ‘Paint it Pink’ campaign.
In addition to bringing Page 3 back, Mrs Brown is also taking on some of the leading figures in Irish life. This includes Tanaiste (Deputy PM) Joan Burton, former Miss World and Chris de Burgh’s daughter Rosanna Davison, and Republic of Ireland football manager Martin O'Neill.
Irish Sun Editor Paul Clarkson said:
The Paint It Pink campaign makes a real difference in raising awareness and funds in the fight against breast cancer - and it lets people have fun while they do it. So it was a real pleasure to get Mrs Brown on board so we could play a small part in helping that fight.
Irish Cancer Society Chief Executive Officer John McCormack said:
We are absolutely thrilled with the support from the Sun, and Mrs. Brown, on our Paint it Pink campaign. Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers in Ireland. Our friends, families, mothers, wives, and daughters – all too often hear those words ‘you have breast cancer’. We need support to continue our fight against breast cancer. The Irish Cancer Society is calling on men and women all over Ireland to come together this October and fight breast cancer with us by taking part in our new Paint it Pink campaign.
The Irish Sun really stepped up and painted an entire edition pink! They are helping us spread awareness of breast cancer and raise money so we can continue our work towards a future without cancer.
Advertisers are also backing the campaign and will be donating to the Irish Cancer Society. Today’s edition will also include heartfelt stories from women who survived cancer thanks to the Irish Cancer Society. For more information on the campaign, go to www.paintitpink.ie #pinkpics
Such is his commitment to backing the campaign for The Irish Sun, O’Carroll – who is currently finishing the latest script for Mrs Brown’s Boys – is editing from Florida on deadline.
